Under the new Afforestation Programme, peat soils over 30cm in depth are excluded from planting. The Forest Service claims that they have data from 25 peat sites in Ireland which have been studied and measured and based on this research, the decision to restrict planting on peatsis based on this research. I note there is a lobbying return from the Irish Farmers Association published on 16th September 2023 ‘to establish the Department of Agriculture, Food, and the Marine's position on the RTE programme as the Department is the Regulator in this instance.’ There were a number of emails, a meeting with DAFM and a social media action. Yesterday (July 5th) officials from the Department of Agriculture made a statement to the Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine giving an update on Ireland's Forest Strategy. This stated: The Commission is currently reviewing this notification in detail to decide whether the proposed Forestry Programme is compatible with EU State Aid Rules. I can advise that to this effect, the Department has now received further written correspondence relating to this notification on the 06th and the 21st of June 2023 I am looking for a copy of the Commission's correspondence from June 6th and June 21st 2023. This request includes modelling exercises designed as early retirement schemes for both beef and dairy farmers. As part of such modelling exercises, I request that specific details be provided on the number of bovines (beef and dairy) that could be reduced under any/all scenarios, the amount of money farmers would be compensated for reducing bovine numbers on a per head basis, the proposed timeframes involved, and the terms and conditions of such proposed schemes with regard to impact on future generations with a farm family. Furthermore, I request access to details on the level of agricultural emissions that could be reduced under any/all modelling exercises for reducing beef and dairy bovine numbers in Ireland.
