TII’s Overarching Principles

TII’s two Overarching Principles in Figure 6 below underpin our six Sustainability Principles, providing the foundation of our Sustainability Implementation Plan. They set out our strategic direction and support consistent delivery across our activities, such as those highlighted in Figure 10. These principles are integral to delivering sustainable projects and programmes and embedding sustainability across TII.

Sustainability Ambitions

Figure from page 14

Figure from page 14

This section outlines TII Sustainability Ambitions to 2030, 2040 and 2050, together with a sample of workstreams that will support their achievement. These sustainability ambitions are aligned to the TII Statement of Strategy 2026-2030, work towards the achievement of the National Climate Objective and provide a direction of travel for sustainability implementation at TII. Achievement of these ambitions will be supported by this implementation plan and through the delivery of a wide range of projects and initiatives (e.g. climate adaptation, biodiversity, circular economy, and social impact) that cut across a number of these workstreams.

Working Together

The successful delivery of our ambition is underpinned by our two overarching principles; Leadership, Collaboration and Partnership, and Working Together and Enabling People. We recognise that our ambitions and goals cannot be achieved in isolation, and we must continue to work with our internal and external stakeholders. TII is responsible for the delivery, management, and operation of the National Road network, light rail network, Metrolink and greenways. All of these networks are used by communities across Ireland and interact within a complex transport ecosystem. Across the transport sector, TII works under the direction of the Department of Transport and with other partners including local government, academia, industry, European authorities, other government agencies, and other public transport operators.

We recognise that to achieve the ambition of the SIP, and to deliver holistically upon the SIP, we must collectively work with stakeholders across different organisations within the transport ecosystem. Figure 8 below illustrates some of the key transport entities, highlighting the importance of integrating coordination across entities for a safe, efficient and equitable transport network.

Sustainability: A responsibility for us ALL

To deliver on the outcomes outlined in our SIP we must all work together. We have a wealth of expertise across all divisions within TII, and we are supported by expertise provided by our industry partners. Some of us may contribute directly to achieving Sustainability Outcomes, while others may contribute indirectly through supporting the work of colleagues or influencing the work of other parties outside of TII. Sustainability Outcomes

The Sustainability Principles act as a guide to steer TII activities. Sustainability Outcomes have been developed in accordance with Figure 9 to ensure we deliver on our commitments, representing the tangible results TII aims to achieve through our activities in response to national policy actions and our own sustainability priorities. The Sustainability Outcomes translate high‑level government objectives into measurable, deliverable activities which are embedded across TII programmes and projects. National Targets and Actions are mapped to SIP principles and consolidated into TII specific targets, and delivery is supported by clear metrics and KPIs, enabling TII to track progress and embed sustainable delivery across its activities, determining a Sustainability Outcome. Progress against the Sustainability Outcomes is being monitored on a quarterly basis, with further detail on current activities set out in the Appendix B.
