Similarly, Action 22, which relates to BusConnects network redesign, laid out some specific deadlines for the finalisation of the Cork and Galway bus network redesigns. The Cork network redesign was finalised successfully in 2022 and work on implementation of this plan is ongoing in 2023. The design of the Galway network has been slightly delayed. The proposed redesigned Galway bus network was published for public consultation in April 2023. Taking into account submissions received, the Galway bus network redesign will be amended, and the proposed new network will be published in the coming months. However, it is important to note that this portion of the action is just one element of a large project which is otherwise progressing on schedule.

National Household Travel Survey

The National Household Travel Survey is designed to provide a comprehensive picture of the daily travel patterns of Irish residents. The SMP (Action 69) commits to publishing this survey on annual basis so that we can track progress across SMP objectives. Details on the NTA’s most recent National Household Travel Survey in 2022 is planned for release later in 2023. This will be complemented by Action 42 which commits to expanding the Walking and Cycling Index to Cork, Galway, Limerick and Waterford to assess infrastructure; travel behaviour; the impact of walking and cycling; and new initiatives in each city.

Some ‘At Risk’ actions (e.g., Actions 72 and 75) may be subject to potential constraints elsewhere. Work has nevertheless begun on such actions and the department will seek to advance them as quickly as possible, working in conjunction with key staff in the Houses of the Oireachtas.

Overall, the SMP Leadership Group and its Delivery Team will continue to monitor actions which are ‘At Risk’ to ensure they are brought on schedule as soon as possible, and to prioritise those actions which will have a direct and tangible impact in shifting journeys from private cars to more sustainable modes of transport.

Several SMP actions relate to areas of work which take place annually or on an ongoing basis, which are monitored via quarterly updates.

Two of these actions relate to programmes of work whose status will not fully materialise until the end of the delivery period in 2025, e.g. Action 62 which relates to an average number of road safety improvement schemes per year over that period. Another – Action 61 - reflects ongoing interdepartmental collaboration, which began in 2022 but which will continue and even expand over the full lifetime of the SMP.
