10.9.1 Smart Weather Buoys
Smart Buoys currently provide the mariner with traditional visual navigational information as well as internet-accessible environmental information from around the coast of Ireland, including:
Irish Lights is the General Lighthouse Authority for Ireland, its adjacent seas, and islands. Irish Lights is responsible for the provision and maintenance of lighthouses, buoys, beacons, and radio aids to marine navigation (AtoN) to assist the safe and continuous passage of all classes of mariners in general navigation and has a duty of superintendence and management for all local AtoN. Irish Lights is required to inspect Local AtoN and report the result of those inspections to the relevant Government Minister. AtoN cannot be established, disestablished or altered without prior consent from Irish Lights.
▪Sea state (Wave Height, Wave
Period)
▪Weather conditions (Wind Speed,
Wind Direction, Gust Speed, Gust Direction)
▪Water Temperature.
Information and data feedback from the smart weather buoys around the coast are available at MetOcean Charts (irishlights.ie).
All radio navigation systems are susceptible to interference (including jamming) and environmental effects, which can adversely affect their availability. Irish Lights strongly advises that no single Aids to Navigation system should be used in isolation and that users should use all alternative means available to cross check the information received. Further information can be found at www.irishlights.ie.
If you see an Aid to Navigation that is not functioning correctly, please contact the Irish Lights 24 hour emergency number on +353 1 280 1996.
