▪Be a competent swimmer.
▪Ensure the board is provided
The Irish Surfing Association (Irish Surfing) is the national governing body for Stand-Up Paddle Boarding activities in Ireland (see Appendix 10 for contact details).
with a suitable leash for the environment and conditions you will be paddling in and use it.
▪Do not paddle alone.
▪Always ensure somebody ashore is
aware of your location and return time and avoid paddling at night.
▪Only paddle in waters that are
suitable and safe. Understand the elements and hazards – winds, tidal ranges and flows. Avoid offshore winds and fast flowing waters.
▪Wind can often overpower a
paddle boarder. Ensure you have enough energy for the return journey. Laying low on the board will reduce the wind area.
▪When operating in areas near
other marine traffic, fairways or shipping lanes, be aware that your profile on the water is almost invisible. Allow sufficient time to cross and never cross in front of shipping.
